Worm Bin Tank Update #I

So far they are in the basement.I moisten them once a week,As it has no lid.The worms are feeding like nuts.I'm gonna wait for around 3-6 months and then get the worms out and keep them in a kritter keeper setup.Everything is running smoothly. The worms are eating.I have found some cocoons.I still haven't found any new born worms yet

First VC harvest Experince

Okay so i just harvested my first batch of real VC.The method i used is the good old sifting method. No worms made it through.I have nice VC.Perfect consistancy. Now i'm not going to have to do another one till propably fall unless i find some time for another one.Worms are doing fine.

VC when to harvest

Okay so if you've had your bin going for a while you may be woundering when should i harvest the VC[VermiCompost]Well here is the answer:

You can do either one of two things:
-Wait for three months and harvest
-Or you can just keep on composting till you can't fit anything in.

The first and the second do require a few steps.First you have to have enough VC to worry about harvesting. And of course you do need to let your system Mellow out for a few weeks usually 2-3 or more. Why???Well if i was to harvest VC when there is still food scraps it makes it very challenging to get the worms out of the VC and then you'd have to remove all the food scraps. It's just more easier to do it the wait way.LOL no pun intended it just came out.Hopefully this helps out a few people.

W00T My Worms Are making the thrid Generation!

Just found a couple of cocoons which means i may be in for the next generation. This will be my third generation. It shouldn't take too long for them to hatch maybe 2-3 weeks or a month.Hopefully i see little worm babies in may.Keep you posted.

W00T Moving Into The Big Leagues!

Okay i've finally decided to make the big move.I didn't actually move them into a kk setup.I moved them into a bigger container That was ment for holding in gummy worms .Anyway i just threw in everything. The worms are just getting used to me dumping them into their new enclosure.I think they will breed very quickly in this newer setup.Actually i found something that i'll make a diffrent post on later.

Worms

Okay i know this is supposed to be a resource but i think i should be able to ask koolkid/cody questions. Here goes.I'll ask it on the forum too.Which you seem to be dead on :(

Okay so i have seen some maiting, now how long should it take to start seeing cocoons? Then how long does it take to get them to hatch? Finally how many hatch?

Worm bin Update April 19/2010

April 19/2010-Day#32- My worm bin size has decreased as i have given away some of my worms for another [who is a loyal member of my forum and also the second member of this blog.] wormer to get farming with worms. My culture is at around 25+ which isn't too bad.It should hit the 50 mark in around 3-4 weeks. All is well and i've done my first harvest which i gotta say was perfect consistancy not dry but not wet.I'll post a tut on that later. So i've reset them up with some banna peel as food.I just want them to mellow out and grow in population before i start experimenting with them.I'll for sure be adding a few more things to this blog in general as i'm sure jeff will too.I've really got to thank jeff for his posts. If you need anything jeff ask on the forum ;) thanks again.

I'll be [usually weekly] updating everyone on my worms and how they are doing as well as updating everyone on diffrent worm/vermicompost stuff.

Koolkid/Cody

Got my Worms

Well yesterday i finally got my first little bit of worms.I'm starting with 10 red wigglers.I'm just gonna throw them into a 10 gallon with bedding and wait till the population increases to around 1-2 pounds. Then i'll have half as my breeders and half as the experiment colony.
I'll keep everyone updated and have a bigger journal like post soon.

Worms Worms Worms

Well today marks my day of harvesting worms from compost. So my plan is to pick out all the worms[i only have 30+] and hopefully this works.I do plan to keep a handful of it in the bin of course.I also will be keeping the uneaten bedding to reuse. The worms are near the bottom [go figure :/ ] so i can't lure them out like i origanally planed to do.Which is sad as that would have been simple.Oh well i'll take it the hard way.If this plan works i'll post a tut on it on here as well as the forum:

Worm Bin KK Tutorial

Hello everyone its me koolkid.Today i'm going to talk about how to setup a kritter keeper[or kk] worm bin setup. Its really simple and really inexpensive.Just need a few things:
-KK meadium to large
-Bedding material[i used newsprint black and white]
-Food
-Worms
-Time

Now rinse the kk and then add into the bin a nice 1cm to 1inch of bedding.Next add some food waste.I used carrots. Then add more bedding.Moisten all the layers. Now you can wait for aroung 7-30 days or you can add the worms in right away.I'd recomend that if you have time.Wait the 20+ days.It really helps. Now with this bin don't over moisten. Also i like to once a week or so.Mix the bin up and get everything flowing. Also i add a big piece of newsprint to the top.
This is the kk tutorial.Hope it helps everyone. My worms are happy and went from 12 to 30+ in around 3-4 weeks.
Hope this helps!!!!!!!!

Harvesting

Hello everyone its me koolkid.I'm going to be doing my first ever vermicompost harvest.I'm going to have to research a bit on the subject and allow my bin to mellow out for a bit.I'll keep you updated and if its sucessful i'll post a tut on how to harvest a worm bin.

Welcome To The World Of Vermicomposting:Newbies Guide To Keeping And Maintaining a Worm Bin!

This page is deticated to helping newbies with setting up their first worm bin.Now before we do this we must know more about the types of worms. The common worm used is called a red wiggler. These are found under manure on farms. The second is european nightcrawlers. The type of worm depends apon the ammount of food and space you are providing.More food and space you can go with European nightcrawlers. For begginers though i'd recomend red wigglers. These are general feeders and are fast with reproducing. Here are the things we will talk about:EnclosureBeddingFoodWaterMaintenceEnclosureThe perfect enclosure for a newbie would be a rubbermaid bin.But for those who are more advanced you can make your own creations. The simple yet effective rubbermaid setup is relitivly easy to use and setup. Here we are going to go through it step by step.First get two or one[Depends on if you wanna have one for vermicompost which i recomend you have just in case.] then some bedding which we will talk about in the next chapter.Anyway all you need to do is cut the top middle piece of the bin. Then glue/tape a piece of metal screen i'd double screen to keep knats and stuff out.Now you are ready for the next step!BeddingBedding is a must for any worm bin. Here is my mixture.Cardboard always goes on the bottom.Include 1-2 inches of cardboard on the bottom.Next add in some food scraps then a small amount of dirt. Not much. Then more cardboard. Now moisten the bedding a bit.Thats the bedding.Next up is food scraps what to use remember i only include what newbies should use ;) then what you shouldn't use.Food ScrapsHere is the lists first is what to use seconds what not to use.Good-Veggie scraps-Fruit scraps-Aged manure-Grass clippings-Dead fall leaves-Coffee/tea bagsBad-Onions -Bread/pastas-Citrus -Oily foods-Meat-Dairy productsAlso keep common sense with you with somethings.Water RequirementsWater is very important. But you need the right water and the right ammount.I'd suggest using bottled or spring water.I use a sprayer and moisten the substrate/food that way.Its way eaiser and hassle free.I usually moisten one side.Water needs to be in the bin at all times as worms breath through their skin.MaintenceWorm farms require next to no maintence or upkeep. All you do is add in more food/water as needed.Once every three months you may want to harvest the worms.I'd recomend not feeding your bin and letting it mellow out a bit before.Usually around 2-4 weeks does the trick. Then get a big tray and throw the bin onto it.Let it stand outside for an hour then remove layers until you see worms.Repeat until there is just barely any vermicompost left and remake your bin and continue to maintain it.

Yes i know this was on its own page but i thought i'd help someone who couldn't find the page.Which is below the logo spot.Hope it helps someone.

A post about Fruit Flies

Argh i'm guessing over 30% of vermicomposters have had their farshare of Fruit flies[or FFs] in their bins.I'm [thank god] not one of the 30%.I haven't even seen them near the room i keep my worms in.Which is my room. Now how do you get rid of them?Well basicly let the bin mellow out. What till they are all gone.If you can kill any non worm like critters in there such as maggots.Keep springtails though they are helpful.Kill all the FFs you can.Hopefully the proplem is solved. If not take advanced actions.Get the hanging fly traps the sticky ones.Put them above but not in the worm bin.

Worm Bin Journal Day#30

April 17th/2010-Day#30! The only reason its already day#30 and not day#1 is because i started it about 30 days ago.The bin has been doing great.Already has 40+ hard working worms in it.They do such a good job at well their job!Ill keep you updated!

Worm Bin Explosiong!

My worms have literal exploded with babies.I just started with twelve about 3 weeks ago and now i have about 40+ worms. These worms are awsome.I think i may have to update their enclosure in the future if they have babies every month. The egg cocoons hatch so quickly i only got a climps of them.I haven't been paying too much attention just feeding them and watering them.Of course i don't have any pests in my bin.I have had a great three weeks. No newbie mistakes yet.Although i do now know how much food to place in the bin through trial and error.I'll be making a blog post like a journal on my worm bin soon.

Types Of Worm Bins

There are many diffrent types of worm bins to use.The most typical is the rubbermaid or just the bin setup.Basicly all you do is throw in some cardboard or other bedding and then some food wastes. Then more bedding.Moisten the bedding and then you can wait for as long as you want[the longer the better] before you add the worms. But if you are new and this is your first bin you can just add the worms into the bin.Remember to read the Types of worms post as garden worms don't work for vermicomposting indoors anyway.

Types Of Worms

There are a ton of worms but only a couple are suitable to use for vermicomposting. The most typical and easiest is the red wiggler worm. These are the worms found on farms under aged manure. The second most typical worm is eruopean nightcrawlers. These are big worms native to eruope. They are very easy to culture but require a bigger bin and more food waste then red wigglers.
